A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
