Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
